How to add a sale banner with dates to your Shopify store
A sale banner tells every visitor what’s on and until when: “Black Friday: 20% off everything, Nov 27 to Nov 30”. The hard part isn’t adding it. It’s remembering to change it when the sale starts and ends.
Updated October 10, 2026. Steps checked on the Dawn and Horizon themes.
Do it yourself in the theme editor
Announcement bar (any theme)
- Open Online Store > Themes, click Edit theme and click Header > Announcement bar.
- Add an announcement with your offer and dates, and a link to the sale collection.
- Save, and remove it by hand when the sale ends.
On a schedule, with Rollouts
- Go to Markets > Rollouts > Create rollout and choose Event.
- Save it, then click Add changes > Edit theme and add the banner.
- Set when the event starts and ends. The change goes live and rolls back on those dates.
Rollouts need the Basic plan or above and don’t work with vintage themes. Choose Event, not Launch: a Launch stays.
Where the theme editor falls short
- The announcement bar is plain text: no countdown, no image, no button that looks like part of the sale.
- Without Rollouts, someone has to switch it on and off by hand.
- The banner and the discount have separate dates: if one changes, the other doesn’t.
Or ask Yef
Yef is an AI developer built for Shopify themes, and you don’t need any technical skills to use it. You write the change in plain words and see what it will do, and Yef applies it to a draft of your store that you try before anything goes live.
Add a Black Friday banner to the top of the home page with “20% off everything”, a countdown to Monday at midnight and a Shop the sale button. Show it only from November 27 to November 30.
A banner in your store’s style that shows up on the 27th, counts down and goes away after the 30th, without anyone switching it off. You try it on a draft first.
Yef is invite-only during the beta. Join the waitlist and you’ll get an invite at your email when there’s a spot.
Questions
Can Shopify schedule a banner?
Yes, with Rollouts: an Event publishes theme changes for a set period and then rolls them back. The banner itself still has no countdown.
Do I need an app for a countdown timer?
Neither Dawn nor Horizon includes one. Countdown apps add it with their own code; Yef’s AI writes it into your theme instead.
